Ocean sticks..
I used to be addicted to these, but when I started low-carbing I found that these can be quite high in carbs. So do check before buying, because they obviously aren't 100% seafood.
The KiteKat Trout... Fishy Tales Part Three..
At one point in my childhood, I was lucky enough to live in a converted watermill, with a trout stream. My mother is an animal lover, who prefers them to people. So instead of allowing us to fish the trout, my mother fed them on KiteKat. Often, we would return from holiday to find a few missing. Ma would be upset, but probably not as upset as the angler who tucked into the big, fat, trout, tasting of catfood..
My first lobster..
The only saucepan that we owned which was big enough to hold a large lobster, was the one which Ma boiled up the whites in. Not sheets and towels, just handkerchieves and knickers. So my brother and I were quite worried that this lobster would taste of Persil (and I don't mean parsley).
Pa was late home and Ma was so incensed that he'd kept this special meal waiting, that she hit him over the head with the lobster.
When the lobster was pronounced ready, there was the problem of breaking it open. Pa was lucky that he didn't get hit with the rolling pin, which Ma attacked the lobster with.
We were handed a bread board and a meat tenderiser and told to bash it - that remains my preferred stress-busting way of dealing with lobster.

Fishy tales Part Two..
My mother is a cod's roe fan. Myself, I prefer taramasalata. As a child, I remember being presented with a pile of grey cod's roe on a plate, with a mound of lumpy mashed potatoes. I can still remember the taste, like gritty wet sand and the smell. Ma would tuck into her roe happily, to a background noise of two wailing young children. I'm really not sure that forcing children to eat food they just can't bear, is a good maternal strategy. I don't eat cod's roe, liver or tripe at all.
Fishy tales Part One..
When I was a child, my mother would drag myself and my brother into the one remaining wet fish shop in Maidstone, Kent. As soon as my younger brother heard her ask for herrings, he would start screaming and crying. He would do a little war dance on the spot. If the idea was to embarrass our mother into buying something else, it never worked, not once.
I can't remember eating the herrings but I must have done. I was a big fan of rollmops (pickled herrings) and Ma and I would easily scoff a jar in the car on the way home from Sainsbury's. Jamie, Ma's cocker spaniel was a fan too, and once stole mine from my dinner plate by jumping up onto a dining chair while we were gathering knives and forks in the kitchen.

Hastings Fishermens' Protection Society visit December 2011
On Wednesday 14 December 2011, I met with Yasmin from HFPS. The purpose of the visit was to meet her, see the fishery, look at the vegetated shingle and discuss using Classroom in the Coast for meetings.
Classroom on the Coast will the first classroom and demonstration kitchen attached to a MSC-certified fishery, in the world.
Yasmin took me walkabout on the beach and I visited the Fishermens' Museum.
This tall building is a net shop used for storage. Traditionally they are 8ft square at the base.
The sea from the fishermens' beach
The building in the background is a hotel, being built to mimic the net shops. The ruins at the top of the cliff are the remains of Hastings Castle and can be reached by cliff lift.
This is just one of the bricks regurgitated by the sea on the high water line.
Vegetation above the high water mark on the beach, including ribwort plantain, sea kale, mallow and brambles.
RX89 Kaya on the beach with nets - as you can see it was quite windy.
This photo gives a better view of the new hotel. The white church houses the Fishermens' Museum
RX 256 on the beach, the RNLI Lifeboat station and seagull on the board outside a fishmongers converted from a net shop

2am emails
The amount of work I need to put in now is getting heavy. If I had a job, I just wouldn't be able to do this. Daytime meetings, work on the photo database, trying to get all the ideas in my head down into documents, persuade people to speak to the society etc etc it all just snowballs. Two nights in a row I've been up till 2am emailing. Not good.

An outfit called 1classifieds managed to copy an expired Craigslist ad for Coastal Gardening Society and post it, adding that Coastal Gardening Society is open to approaches from commercial interests. I told them I want it deleted and that I would be contacting Craigslist and I have also told Craigslist that these cowboys copied a post that was supposedly expired and that they should do something about it.

Coastal Gardening Society update
Been coughing mightily and had a head full of cotton wool with a cold which turned into a chest infection and left me wheezing and sounding like Kermit and not in a good way.. so I apologise to anyone who thinks there's too many fish recipes on here and not enough gardening lately.
Coastal Gardening Society is not ya average horticultural society, it's not about biggest marrows or the best home-grown strawberry jam. It's not traditional, it's new.
Coastal Gardening Society is a member of the Coastal Communities Alliance and one of the aims is to get communities involved in regeneration, using horticulture as a way of involving local people in the regeneration of their coastal community. Regeneration shouldn't be something imposed on a community, which doesn't involve them and seems only to benefit weekending DFLs (Down From Londons).
At the same time, the gap between long-term residents of coastal communities and incomers needs to be bridged, because a divided community is good for no-one. Whereas new money and talent help pull a stagnating seaside place out of the doldrums.
Coastal Gardening Society is about gardening in a maritime microclimate. We live in a special environment so let's celebrate that and basically, get stuck in, to everything on offer. So it's not 100% gardening. But that's not a bad thing if you get the curator of a museum giving you a personal guided tour of a smuggler's town or the director of a nature reserve teaching you about native coastal plants after lunch in a 16th century pub, surely ?
But gardening won't be neglected. No, there will be plant clinics with plant societies to give advice and talks on desiging gardens, composting etc.
For the next few days I'm concentrarting on the website. I'd rather have a few pages I'm perfectly happy with than lots I'm not.

Bank account
Many banks and building societies ask clubs, associations and societies to have £1000 before they open a bank account which is IMO pretty daft. I trawled all around the Internet looking and got quite despondent.
In order to get a PayPal account for membership income and a charity shop on eBay for the society it needs to have a bank account. Catch 22.
Decided to try my own bank, Lloyds TSB. Glad I did because they offer a bank account that can be started with a nil balance and there are no transaction charges on turnover of less than 50 000 GBP. So I went through the application on the phone this morning :) Thank you to Nicola for her help !

Crocs !!
www.crocs.co.uk
There are only two places I don't wear Crocs - in the shower and in bed.
For the first week they felt strange although I've never had a blister. After that I just never even noticed that I'm wearing them on my feet. My feet look healthy, they don't get sweaty or blistered and I can walk miles without my feet getting tired. I don't have to worry about ruining my shoes if I get them wet with a hose in the garden and I can play around on the beach with my dawg and not worry about the salt or damaging my feet. I've never had the slightest mishap with escalators either. Without a doubt the best thing my feet have ever experienced.
