Amazingly, olive trees often grow back from this. During a visit in 1990 there was a particularly bad fire which surrrounded Draguignan, a town the size of Maidstone in Kent. Thousands of hectares of land were destroyed, lives were lost, including a fire crew. With my parents I survived by following les sapeurs pompiers down a hill and camping out on the beach in the car.
