Gardening and Latin names

I believe that gardening is one of the great levellers, a pastime than can be enjoyed whether you have four hectares or a windowbox. I really want to encourage the use of common plant names side by side with the Latin ones, because it bothers me when I have to look up foeniculum vulgare to find out that it's fennel. Very few schools offer Latin these days. At thirteen, I didn't expect to get into gardening and chose German. Irony is I've spent mere hours in Germany, travelling to Switzerland and could have coped at autobahn service stations with a phrase book. Gardening has so many benefits in terms of health and stress alleviation to name but two, I think that anything which encourages people to garden is a good thing. Using a dead language for plant names isn't terribly helpful.
