Until recently, provenance was a word I associated with antiques. I have learned that it can also be used for plants. To get exotic plants which will grow in the UK, the hardiest plants are selected and bred from, so that new generations of the plants acclimatise.
Supermarket herbs are grown in greenhouses in temperature and humidity controlled conditions, as are many other young plants. They need to be hardened off gradually to avoid them keeling over from the mere shock of being out in the Real Garden.
I am finding that very many plants I buy, don't like the full sun which they are supposed to. I presume this is because they are bred from plants which never escape the greenhouse.
Have you had this experience ?
